Yixing Gaiwan

40.00

One of the most distinctive but unfamiliar pieces of teaware in the Chinese tea service is the gaiwan 盖碗. Gaiwans are a specialized Chinese tea creation to optimally brew and appreciate fine Chinese teas. Gaiwans first rose to prominence in Chinese tea making during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and even were the official imperial tea brewing vessel in Qing Dynasty China. A gaiwan is quite versatile because it can function as both a brewing vessel (instead of say a teapot) or a single serving cup to sip your tea from. Gaiwans are an ideal brewing vessel because they allow great flexibility in tea making, give your tea the ideal environment and space to unfurl and release its precious flavors, and are suitable for brewing various types of tea.
